Brugmansia and Datura
by I Heart Gardening editors
| Brugmansia and Datura are small to medium sized, fast growing shrubs often called "Angel's Trumpet" which can attain treelike proportions in one growing season. They are in the Solanaceae family with 6 species of Brugmansia and 12-15 species of Datura and of course dozens of popular cultivars. The two can be differentiated easily since Datura blooms point upward whereas Brugmansia blooms droop over and hang down. Also, brugmansia are woody perennials whereas Datura are herbaceous annuals.
Growing Brumansia and Datura Brugmansia originate from warm climates in South America. They grow very quickly in warm weather producing noticable daily growth. You can get Brugmansia and Datura to bloom profusely by keeping the soil consistently warm and wet and fertilizing with a "Bloom Boost" once every two weeks during the growing season. Never let them dry out or freeze.
Propagation You can easily make clones of existing plants by either greenwood or hardwood cuttings. Cut off 6" stems and leave a few leaves on at the top. Place the cutting in an open jar with plain water out of direct sun. In a few weeks, roots will form just like an ivy houseplant. You can then transfer to small pots with sterile potting soil. Generally, the se plants prefer to have their roots bound up in the pot so avoid the temptation to overpot them. They will grow up fast enough!
Toxic
All parts of the plant are highly toxic containing a chemical called Atropine. You should carefully consider whether or not grow these beautiful plants if children or pets will come in direct contact with them. If any parts of the plant are ingested, immediate medical care is advised!
