qqq said: This is a Redbud.   Cercis canadensis More probably Texas Redbud: Cercis canadensis var. texensis It has marvelous small magenta flowers in early spring, sometimes more pink/red depending on the tree variety.  Eventually as the tree ages the bark will begin to peel much like a River Birch or Crate Myrtle.   There is a red-leaved variety:  'Forest Pansy' and a white flowering variety 'Texas White'. In summer the large seed pods form and last into fall/winter.  Some like them, some don't/ It's a wonderful small tree for the landscape and great to garden around. Q November 11, 2008 10:18 AM

I'm a creative weirdo living in Austin Texas with my wife. We're both from Texas and just returned to live in Austin after an 11 year adventure in Seattle Washington. We left a few wonderful friends there and miss them a ton. I like to work with plants and curious, fun people and I like to create peaceful garden spaces to escape to. I also like to play and learn music. Currently I'm learning to play guitar. My latest gardening interest is Tropical Rhododendrons. I think they're fascinating and beautiful.
