Autumn is traditionally the time to divide/transplant iris. The heat of the summer is over and the cool autumn weather allows the iris time to become somewhat established before winter weather arrives. Be sure to water the newly transplanted iris if rain doesn't do the job for you. Have fun!

    Re: Dividing iris

I've divided iris in spring time, in the middle of summer, in the fall.  Just about any time but winter.

When I've divided them during the hot months, I cut the foliage back by half.  I make a raised moundm spread the roots downward and cover only the roots not the tuber.  Then I water.

Agree with the other Arkansas gardener that autumn is probably the best time, but mine have done just fine regardless.

Thanks for the advice. I really need to try Iris; something I've never done. Our friends are always offering to lob off chunks of them for us and I think I'm missing out!
