These such nice plants. I only ever see them in the garden center (no one I know keeps them). But from what I understand they are Epiphytes which grow on other trees like Cypress. They don't need soil but do well in peat moss baskets.
The only kind of problem people encounter is when they let them stay too wet and they get black spot which can kill the whole plant. I suppose that in a warm climate with hot summers, it's unlikely that mold is a problem.
Do you have a Staghorn already? I would love to see what you have.
