it looks like it's from the oleander family??? maybe a tropical. what is the climate it's growing in?

It's growing in moist, woodlands of India and Southeast Asia.
I think it's considered to be part of the rhodendron family although it actually isn't.

You're right it is. Maybe we'll come to the same conclusion.
:)

Could it be a Ruellia?

No, I can't see any similarities when you take a look at the inside of the flowers. (Stamen?) This one is quite unique. Do a search on Sendudok and I think you might find this to be very similar if not the same.

Tibouchina urvilleana

I would agree with you except tibouchina urvilleana doesn't have quite the same insides as this one. This flower has yellow as well as the purple inside whereas the tibouchina just has the purple. WOW Is it ever close though. Please try searching Sendudok. I think you'll find it will help us get this beauty solved.

That is the very first comment I entered. LOL The common name is sendudok. I think we finally agree and have identified this plant. What do you think.
