Note: This has come up in my front yard every year, but I don't know if it's a weed or if it was a bulb planted there by the previous owners. Can anyone tell me what it is? I hope it's a good enough picture. I am located in northern New Mexico by the way.

I'm pretty certain that its yellow salsify---trogopon, or sometimes called goatsbeard as its common name. The salsify with the purple flower is the one that sets an edible root---I thinkthe yellow-flowered variety is also edible, but has less of a root and perhaps less tasty. One source I have says to harvest the root when its just in its early growth---before stem and flowers develop. If the sap is milky and after flowering it sets a puffy seed head like a giant dandelion, its even more certain to be trogopon.

I agree. I found Tragopon pratensis subspecies orientalis. It is from the daisy family and considered a type of herb.

Salsify, that's what I know it as. I believe it has documented medicinal properties but I a can't remember them right now.

Your salsify is the same as the plant I located. I checked for medicinal purposes but they say they have fallen away since the mediaeval times. They also say we used to eat the roots like we do parsnips now, but that to is no more. All they say now is it's an herb. I never did find out how they used it medically though. Both our plants are the same. :)
