Note: I think this is some sort of perennial, i cant identify it. two of them came up a few months ago, I planted them last year but threw away the tag stating what it was. one is growing taller than the other, its maybe 1.5-2 at the tallest point. no one i know has been able to identify it yet

Looks like it may be some sort of onamental grass. Red even!
Sorry, just being silly. Except for the grass of course.

I think it is a Penstemon...not sure which variety but some have very similar leaves and stems

Sorry Jay,but if you search penstemon you'll find that they have definite flowers. This plant does not. I still have to go with an ornamental grass of some sort.

it looks like maybe red flowers might be coming out of the nodes

Yuou are quite correct. I didn't notice them. I thought they were new leaves with fuzzy or furry edges. Just beacuse, as I'm sure you know, some start off that way. Anyone else think Penstemon?

I would like to see a picture in a few weeks time to see more clearly if it is going to flower... Penstemon blackbird is similar when young although the leaves are a slighlty different shade...please could you post another picture later in the season...

I posted this, and by surprise it did flower this weekend! 4 small pink flowers at the very top of the tallest stalk. i was told it may be guara pink.

I had a look and the plant itself seems to be the one. Again, you would have to verify the flower either yourself or by sending us one. I do think guara is right.
