Note: We just moved to our first house and I'm fairly clueless about gardening. This flower was here when we moved 4 weeks ago and it's just started blooming in the last week or 2.

It's a type of Coreopsis. I have some in my front yard; they don't quite look like that in the center, but the rest of the plant is exactly like that.

I agree. I have coreopsis as well. They are similar. There are many kinds and I have seen ones with centers like this. There you go. Your garden has just begun. :)

I think it is Coreopsis 'Sterntaler' A very good garden plant. It likes sun.

it looks a lot like dianthus to me.. though they are usualy pink or white.... there are manyvarieties, they are prolific flowerers and very easy to grow

You could maybe see how the flowers could be similar excepts Diathus has flower buds that are grouped together, this plant doesn't. Also, if you look at the buds of these two plants it will rule out Dianthus. I'm pretty sure that we should stick with Coreopsis.

Has anyone thought of a Gaillardia/Blanket flower? I can't tell how big the flowers are but it reminds me of several types of that plant.
