Note: This plant was my mom's before she passed away. I don't know what it is. It had a tag in it saying "Premium Foliage - Grown in Canada". It mentions Tropicals, so I'm guessing that it is. The tag says Place in filtered sun or partial shade. Feed w/mild liquid fertilizer. Keep soil moist.

The plant was doing very good and has sprouted new leaves, but has been dropping leaves and recently a whole branch fell off when I touched it. I want to keep this plant alive. Please help!

Hi Vicki...that's an umbrella plant or Schefflera. Check out this page: http://www.iheartgardening.com/Encyclopedia/ShowPlant.aspx?Symbol=N2987.

I think you might be over watering it. These prefer bright light and don't like to get soggy. Let it dry out between waterings.

Yes, Vicki..It's an umbrella plant/Schefflera. I'd change the soil and follow phempton's comments; bright light and let it dry out between waterings.

Hi Vicki...I have an unbrella plant in a large pot which is over 25yrs old. Very Healthy, the whole top came off about 15 yrs ago, it survived. I just kept potting it on to larger pots. Now about 1&1/2 metres tall and even wider spread. Good advice from previous comments, but if you live in the warm climate areas be careful about putting it in the garden as it could become a monster!

I used to have one as well. We calledit a Hawaiian Cactus (don't ask me why). It was very hardy and believe me took alot of abuse. It too dropped a lot of leaves but when I looked closely it was also sprouting 3 or 4 new ones in different places. Some of my leaves were varieagated as well. Just keep on lovin' it.You'll be surprised what it can withstand!
