It's definitely a salvia/sage. I'm terrible at all the species of salvia, though.

Thank you. How about Salvia-Scarlet sage?

I just bought a flat of these plants (my tops are more deep pink. Anyway, all plants were labled vinca. I knew that was wrong, but couldn't find anyone to help me. Thanks for helping name the plant.

how about a snap dragon, I believe that is the common name for it. I planted some a few years ago and they looked just like that, they are easy to care for..just make sure and water it and the humming birds really like them.... but I can not say for sure, just putting my two cents in on what it could be.

it's definitely a species of salvia. i live out west and we grow all kinds. hummingbirds love them all. usually drought tolerant and deer resistant, or at least in the out here where water is scarce!

It is definitely salvia. I have snapdragons as well and these are nothing like them. Thanks for the attempt though, Robin. If you look at the photos I've posted you'll see the snapdragons. Theen you should be able to see the differences. :)

Lamiaceae. not neccesarily salvia...

know whats stupid about this identification site/gadget(as i use it)? very little, honestly, except for the fact that there is no REQUIRED user ID... that would help sort the grain from the chaff... an environment in which other users could rate the usefulness of comments they've received from other users is needed... otherwise this differs in no way from the multitude of other sites out there offering the same services... i am the same anonymous as the last comment (7/30/2008 11:11:36 PM)... but you wouldn't know it if i hadn't said it... ridiculous...
Anonymous on 7/30/2008 11:19:08 PM
Wow! What's up with that? I'll check out Lamiaceae but still say it's Salvia for now. This site/gadget isn't stupid. It's meant to be fun and for people to freely make their suggestions. Maybe some people aren't as sure of themselves as they would like to be and that is why being able to be "anonymous" is a good thing. This is not a "professional" site and therefore any honest opinion is welcome. What's ridiculous is when people are so serious about things that they can't accept an opinion that may or may not meet their standards. As I said, this site is for fun and for everyone to be able to try their hand at identifying plants and flowers. Not everyone is going to be right and most definitely a lot of us will make mistakes. That's life. So put on a smile and just have some fun. Now to check out YOUR suggestion.

I don't know "Anonymous", but Salvia is part of the Lamiaceae family. Look up Salvia-Scarlet sage. I think you'll find that is the plant.

I grew this from seed one year. It is Salvia coccinea or Texas Hummingbird Sage.

I love the anonymity I hate having to log on to sites and I generally avoid it-just generates more bs and is too big brotherish so this is great and who cares if it is not precise. Close enough!
