Scabiosa is a plant with stems and leaves. That looks like some kind of allium to me. Pick one of those grass-blade-like leaves. if it smells liike onions, its an allium.

Are you thinking chives?
sherryl on 8/7/2008 9:11:43 AM
chives have hollow tube like leaves.......but you are right......the leaves on pincushion or jagged broader leaves.......
reynolds on 8/7/2008 10:08:33 AM
so I would go with allium also....but globemaster or purple sensation..........
reynolds on 8/7/2008 10:11:19 AM
What is the size of this plant? Allium globemasters that I've found are huge. I don't know, I'm still thinking Pincushion.
sherryl on 8/7/2008 11:40:43 AM
The allium purple sensation is really prurple not light like these and they're large too. I really don't think it's an allium. Not unless these flowers are huge as well.

I would definitely say it's a type of allium. I spent at least a few weeks studying alliums, , and if this isn't allium, I'd have to say it's a dead-on imitation.
PerianArdocyl on 8/7/2008 2:38:16 PM
O.K.'ll give, but these balls still seem awfull small for the aforementioned alliums. Any idea what kind?
sherryl on 8/7/2008 5:58:43 PM
maybe its just a baby plant and hasnt grew all it is gonna........ :) plus we are looking down on it instead of from an angle.......it looks healthy ....maybe it would be more taller if it got full sun......

Hi, Laurie:
There are a whole lot of different alliums; I've grown a lot of them but not your kind. Still, Allium senescens is a common garden allium, and when I type that into google, the pictures look a lot like your plant.
laelialee on 8/9/2008 10:19:11 AM
thanks for clearing that one up, laelialee. do you know if there other colors?
Laurie on 8/9/2008 8:32:32 PM
Hi, Laurie:
All of the different species of alliums come in a lot of colors. I have Garlic chives (A. tuberosum) with white flowers, there is Allium moly with yellow flowers, A. caeruleum with true blue flowers ect. but purple is the color of most of the flowers. My Wyman's Garden Encyclopedia lists 31 species.
