No, not a bird of paradise. Maybe a type of Heliconia.

Hmmm Im looking at the leaf there and it looks similar to banana, the flower looks the correct shape for the banana fruit but the colour isn't right. Julie

I think that it's in the Musacea family at least

The leaves are similar to a banana plant and the flower looks like a Canna which has not fully opened . The leaves of the Canna are very similar to the banana plant.

Helconia's have leaves like a banana's. If large, prominant staments poke out when the flower opens, I think its a helconia (Lobster Claw).

Interesting to note that Wikipedia says it used to belong to the banana family (Musacea) but was moved it's own family and genus.
