maybe a sunflower?

The leaves have serrated edges like those of a sunflower, but every sunflower leaf I've seen is more triangular in shape. These are basically round.

Also, this plant is only about 2 feet high and has no signs of any bloom on it.

well, senescence may have something to do with the fact that it hasn't flowered or begun to form yet... also i count 5 or maybe 6 rows of bricks to the height of the new growth... don't have a brick house so i don't know but im guessing is slightly more than two inches/brick... as to the leaf shape i agree, though a google image search shows many leaf forms... in reality though i was just guessing... i don't have a leg to stand on with my thought of a sunflower.

I appreciate any guesses at all. This one's got me stumped.

Don't put much faith in the brick count as a height measurement. I was standing a lot more over the plant than to the side of it when I took the picture.

looks like some sort of squash plant to me.

Not Pawlonia. The leaf shape is the same but Pawlonia leaves do not have serrated edges.

What you have there is Helianthus annuus (Annual Sunflower).

I think you folks have nailed it with the Paulownia.

I had some doubt, because every leaf pic I had seen of the Paulownia until now had smooth edges. But the 2nd pic on that Duke link is a dead ringer for what I've got.

Thanks to everyone who contributed.

I now agree.

This is what was key for me: "leaves... arranged in opposite pairs on the stem"

We are once again in need of a new unidentified plant. Please send a new one in if you have one. I'll take a couple photos of new plants here in Austin that have me stumped.
